In response to Pam's question, here are some of my thoughts---in no
particular order.
Many of the pumps moms use are not new---got it from a friend of a friend,
bought a used one on line, etc. The moderately priced double electric pumps
are , in my experience, not up to such extended use. Check and see if mom
is using a brand spanking new pump.
I try and encourage moms to sneak in as many extra nursing sessions as
possible. Nursing to be the last thing you do when you drop the baby off,
and the *first* thing you do when you pick baby up(yes, at the sitter's house
or dc center, even if the caregiver has just fed the baby.) Oh, and
sometimes moms don't factor in their commute time when figuring out how
often they need to pump, and rob themselves of a needed pumping session.
Nuse-athons on the weekend can help. The pattern of more milk on Monday,
less on Friday, and then back up again next Monday after the weekend
nurse-a-thon, is not uncommon among the moms I know.
Breastfeeding.com has a wonderful Bulletin Board just for working/pumping
moms. Lots of support available, a few "old-wives" tales, but also lots of
good suggestions from moms out there in the trenches.
Also, if you've been following the thread on milk volumes/baby growth , it
can be very reassuring to a mom to know that baby doens't need an
ever-expanding amount of milk as baby grows.
Sorry for the relatively fragmented response. I'm nursing my toddler as I
type, and it's hard to stay focussed.
