As a Bostonian of largely Irish descent (with a wee bit of English and
Scottish thrown into the mix!), I'd suggest that at least in this area, the
behavior carries over into their immigrant population as well. I was the
first in my family that anyone "can remember" to breastfeed,.... not that
anyone wants to talk about it ;) ! We/they tend to fall on the "more modest"
end of the modesty continuum as well! Needless to say, noone is real anxious
to bring up my job at the family dinner table.
Of the seven of my close girlfriends from college, all from this area, 6 were
first or second generation Irish descent and the only one to breastfeed was
the non Irish. Although.....she has been known to fib a little on St.
Patrick's day!
Lynn Shea Rn,Bsn,Ibclc- yes, who married an Irishman as well and is working
tirelessly to change these statistics!~
