GIVE UP THE WEED, DAD
One of the most tragic consequences of smoking tobacco is sudden
infant death syndrome. For babies of women who smoke in
pregnancy, the risk of cot death increases up to 15-fold. But it's not
just women or tobacco that is responsible. Men who smoke
cannabis before or after their child's birth can double that baby's
risk of cot death. This is the finding of Hilary Klonoff-Cohen and
colleagues at the University of California, San Diego. They found no
effect for female dope smokers, though this may be because there
were fewer of them in the study. How might the damage be done?
One of the weed's ingredients closely resembles anandamide, a
signalling chemical that affects sperm and embryos.
