Catching up on a few days' Lactnets, and interested to see the price of your
formulas. Just to compare, a 500g packet of powdered formula (the only kind
available) in Harare costs Z$326 (well, this week, anyway ...) You need 80
of these packets to feed one baby for one year. That's Z$26 080, which is
US$81.50 on the parallel market. But before you get carried away thinking
how cheap this is, compared to Marsha's figure of US$1280 for the same
quantity, what it really costs is approximately 60% of the annual minimum
wage, and we currently have over 60% unemployment.
Needless to say, there are no free handouts. Neither our economy nor our
Code would permit them. But the comparison in costs is interesting, isn't it?
