Happy New Year!!!
Sure it can cause blood in the stool. Two reasons.......
1. It's not good old, readily digestible breast milk. It might be
irritating the baby's gut. Seen a lot of babies develop heme positive or
bloody stools after human milk fortifier added to breast milk--it's also made
from cow's milk, NOT human milk, as some people think due to the name.
Miracle of miracles--the heme positive stools generally clear after babies
restarted on plain breastmilk!
2. Formula tends to make babies quite a bit more constipated and prone to
passing firmer stools, thereby making anal fissures more likely.
They probably could see an anal fissure and may be comfortable making that
diagnosis, but it does not excuse them for saying "stupid stuff".
Good luck to your client........
