In my prenatal class, after discussing the mechanics of latching and
showing the video, I talk about the fact that some moms want help, some
just someone to stand by in case they're needed and others would rather
be left alone to do it on their own and will call if help is needed.
Then I encourage them to let their nurse know which preference, if any,
they have. If the nurse assumes Mom wants her there and she doesn't,
the nurse is viewed as "pushy". On the other hand if the nurse leaves
mom and baby alone and mom wanted some help, the nurse is viewed as
abandoning her. It is important to encourage the mom to express her
preferences as well as for nurses to be open to working with each mom on
the level mom is most comfortable with.
