Hi Andrea,
I recognise your problem. I have found that if I´´allow´´ the mom to 
bottlefeed expressed milk untill her nipples are healed or whatever her 
problem was is gone or dealt with, and then help her and her baby to re-learn 
how to breastfeed, my successrate is higher. This does not mean that every 
mom subsequently does bottlefeed, but it is more like that if a mother knows 
that there is a way out, that is approved of by a specialist, that that just 
sort of lessons the pressure she feels she works under.
Ofcourse, I don´t like babies being bottlefed, even with moms milk, but 
dislike even more babies being bottlefed formula for the rest of infancy and 
toddlerhood! In the vast majority of moms I see the problem can be trailed 
back to initial latch problems. So baby has to relearn how to breastfeed 
anyway. I have come to prefer for some mothers to start this relearning 
process not untill pain has gone away..
It was a surprised to myself that this could work this way. I like to hold on 
to a saying (I can´t recall the origin): If it can´t be done the way it 
should, it should be done the way it can.
