I can vouch for these.  My oldest was born in 1965 and I was told : "1
minute each side the first day, 3 minutes each side the second and
increase by 1 minute a day..."  Even then, with as little as I knew
about breastfeeding, my question was, "But what about the fact that he
pauses?  Do I count that time or only when he is actually sucking?"

Sometimes, especially when we feel we're spinning our wheels, it helps
to look at where we've been and where we are now.  I gives some hope
that eventually, we will "get there".  Of course, "there " keeps
changing.  I'm sure down the road we'll learn that at least some of what
we firmly believe now will  change as we continue to learn more about
breastfeeding and what makes it "work".
