When working with people who have had weight-loss
surgery, it is important to find out what type of
surgery she has had (there are about 5 different
procedures one can have). It is also important to
know how long it has been past the surgery and if the
client has any food intolerances since the procedure.
Many clients who are more than 1 year past the
operation may have no problems with getting in
adequate food intake to maintain pregnancy &
lactation. Others may have longterm issues with food
intake & mineral & vitamin absorption. Some
procedures cause a malabsorptive process, but not all
do. The history is the key to guiding the dietary
guidance in these situations. Another helpful idea is
to find out if the client's surgeon has an information
line to find out the answers if the client is no
longer sure what kind of procedure she had or what
cautions need to be taken. I am in a support group
for people who have had weight-loss surgery and it
varies widely between what we are told to do & what
supplements to take & what each individual chooses to
do.
Sincerely,
Linda Madsen, BS, CPN, IBCLC
