To add to the recent thread on the necessity of administering vitamin K
to newborns, I recall some speculation to the effect that under less
sanitary childbirth conditions, a newborn would have likely been
"inoculated" with bacteria from the mother's intestinal tract, which is
generally emptied out during labor.  Thus the baby system would have
been primed to begin producing its own Vitamin K sooner.  Since modern
childbirth takes place under pretty pristine conditions, we may need to
compensate to protect the newborn.
