Tried to find info in archives but not successful. I am sure that I have
read info on this in the past on Lactnet.

Am seeing a mum with a 6 week old baby. The baby is having 2-3 green poo a
day. Weight gain is more than adequate (150g-340g). Sleeping acceptable
for a baby of this age (5 hrs)and then short naps. Nothing unusal about
feeding patterns. Attachment OK. Has just gone through normal appetite
increase behaviour (this mum was though trying to stretch feeds to 3hrly and
if would not settle was offering water in a bottle - we worked through the
issues related to this). Mum was advised by Child health nurse last week to
feed from one side only and then offer top up feeds from the breast last
finished (and I thought that this also sounded like a good idea). Baby
generally falls into the "breastmilk stupour" sleep. Does become irritable
at times. Was told by father-in-law that the baby could have reflux and
suggested the mum give an antacid (gaviscon) but this appears to have no
real affect. Since using the one side has had a couple of mustard yellow
poos but they have returned green over the last couple of days.

Mother did say that when her breasts are engorged (she has very small
breasts) and at night when baby misses a feed mum wakes very engorged and
baby does struggle with this so we explored all the usual ways to manage
this.

Mums diet is fairly balanced and is not consuming much dairy. She does have
a fondness of chocolate and 3 cups of coffee or tea per day. We talked
about the effects of caffiene and she will have a couple of days caffiene
free to see if that helps with the irritability.

Suggested a Dr's visit to rule out any health problems.

Does any one have any ideas why the poo is green? Mum is curious to know
some reasons (and so am I). I know that Dr Newman says that sunglasses are
a great way to change nappies.

Thanks
