Dear Susan,

Maybe specialization is not the right word.  I think that a broader and more in-depth base of knowledge and experience is what is needed.  I would contend that the more you know, the more likely that you will be able to see the "whole" picture - the greater the understanding, the bigger the picture.  Just because one has acquired, for example, a deeper knowledge of anatomy, does not mean that she can no longer grasp the concept of the breastfeeding dyad operating within a family unit. One does not preclude the other.
