Hello,

I am trying to work today despite all of the horrible news. My prayers are with all of those in the NYC and DC areas, as well as the rest of our country.

I have a mother (primip) with a brown discharge from the breast, and has had this discharge for one year (before pregnancy). Baby is over 24 hours old, not eating, and in need of mom's colostrum via finger feed. Mother says her OB told her he is 99% sure she has a benign cyst in the endocrine system (?) causing this drainage. Mother is worried about giving this colostrum to the baby because she is unsure what the fluid actually is.

I thought about rusty pipe syndrome, but I don't think that's what this is, since it began pre-pregnancy.

Suggestions? Can mom safely feed this brown colostrum to baby?

Thanks,
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
