In my neck of the woods the fair number of women I see exclusively pumping
are nearly all (pace moms of cleft babies etc) mothers who would certainly
have fed formula ten years ago because they are really culturally yucked out
by breastfeeding, but who HAVE been reached by the message that formula for
their babies is substandard.
For them it's a step forward toward breastfeeding, even if an incomplete
step, rather than a step back from it.
So that's progress. Even their friends, hearing them say, "Well, I wouldn't
want to give my baby formula," are one smidge less in an artificial feeding
culture than they were a few years ago.
