On May 23, Ruth Lawrence presented a national
teleconference re: supplements and the BF baby. She
did say that low iron was preferred in the BF baby
because too much exogenous iron would saturate the
iron binding sites of lactoferrin, thus allowing free
iron to feed harmful bacteria. Low iron is not used in
our pediatric community and no pediatricians attended
this presentation that I am aware of...so I doubt that
we will see any change here. Anne Andrianos, IBCLC,
