That is why I like to take advantage of the educatioal opportunities
assesment of infant gives me. Newborns react far more than many parents
notice and that is what I try to teach them by rolemodelling. When I examen a
baby I talk to her, smile, explain to the baby (and the listening
parents/hcp's around) what I do and what I see/feel, I ask the baby to
cooperate, open the mouth, accept my finger, whatever. And I tell, in the
same voice to the parents which reactions I get from the baby.
For example, many parents think a newborn does not smile in the first weeks.
They think the smile-like expression is just a muscle reaction. But if a baby
does that when I hold her I tell her how much I like her ''angel-smile'' that
tells me she does not mind that I'm examening her or something like that.
Parents often then tell me that it indeed seems that baby is content when
smiling like this, while they never do it while feeling uncomfortable.
I call this an angel-smile, to make a difference between this and the later
socialising smile.
