"I cannot say to the mom of a neurologically-impaired infant that
despite her
pumping her milk for a year and all her continued efforts over the
months
that she is not a breastfeeding mother. I cannot say that to a mother
of
baby who had cleft lip and palate that never went to the breast."
Thanks Valerie for saying this. I am currently working with a cleft
palate baby and a preemie... neither of whom are moving milk at the
breast despite their mom's best efforts. I am not about to tell these
moms that they aren't breastfeeding by pumping religiously to provide
hindmilk so their babies will gain. I understand the didactic arguments
for language differences.
