She'll need to rent a hospital grade double pump and pump every few hours in
order to stimulate milk production. Rule of thumb is as long as it's been
since baby nursed, that's how long it will take to get a supply back. She
may not get her full supply back, either. Will the baby latch onto the
breast at all?
WRT the "lactose intolerance", the amount of lactose in the mother's milk is
constant. The foremilk just has less fat, so it goes through the baby's body
much faster, and the lactose often doesn't have enough time to be
metabolized. It's very rare for a baby to have primary lactose intolerance
(aka galactosemia), so I doubt the pediatrician's dx was accurate. You're
right that she should probably follow the protocol for foremilk/hindmilk
imbalance (although with relactating, that probably won't be an issue,
she'll probably be struggling with not making enough milk, instead).
