On the flight home from the breastfeeding conference in North Carolina this
past Sunday, I sat next to a Navy man, who was on the first leg of a long
trip back to his ship off the coast of southern Spain. Directly behind us
was a mother with a very unhappy baby, strapped into her car seat for
takeoff. The Navy guy was grumbling about the crying baby, and how that was
the last thing he needed, and why didn't the mother give the baby a bottle?
I pointed out that perhaps she was breastfeeding, and said that as soon as
the seat belt signed was turned off, I was sure the mother would get the
baby out of her seat and nurse it. Sure enough, that's what happened and
the baby immediately stopped crying, of course. The big Navy guy turned and
looked back over the seat at the nursing couple and gave the mother a big
smile and a "Thank you, ma'am!" before closing his eyes and going to sleep.
As we were getting off the plane, he said something else nice to her -- I
didn't hear what it was, but she smiled and said thank you to him.
Just a nice bf story.
