At this point I think your friend would just be guessing about her bone
density. I don't think there is enough info out there about how low bone
density goes and how much and when it rebuilds in longer term bf. I guess it
also depends on the mom's age, lactation history, frequency of current bf,
etc. I think your friend needs some hard data so she can make some informed
decisions. Perhaps a bone density scan and some endocrine workup like
parathyroid hormone function? If she guesses at calcium supplementation she
could get kidney stones or some other untoward effect. I hope her doc will
work with her on these concerns, as she sounds like a savvy mom who wants to
maximize her overall health potential. Good luck and good health to her.
