I am particularly interested in this discussion, as I had a VBAC. My first
labor was induced due to ruptured membranes, after 18 hours with pitocin,
they did the section. 15 1/2 years later when I decided to have another
baby, I went about it very differently. I chose a hospital that was very
family centered, and interviewed doctors BEFORE I got pregnant. I had a whole
list of requests, I wanted my older daughter to be present, I wanted to be in
a birthing room, interventions only if needed, bf right away, 24 hour
rooming in and I wanted to be discharged within 24 hours after birth. I had
discussed at length with my MD, that I did not want ANY drugs in labor.
My water broke, got to the hospital almost 24 hours later, lied about when it
broke by 12 hours. I take full responsibility for this, something in my gut
told me to lie, it was not planned. The resident decided he wanted to induce
me at what he thought to be the 24 hour point. Needless to say, I kicked him
out of my room. He started quoting me the stats on sepsis in the newborn, I
quoted right back the risks to a repeat section. He never did come back to my
room.
Almost 48 hours after my water broke, I went into active labor, it lasted
about 8 hours, and I pushed out a beautiful baby girl. My older daughter was
the one who said, *Mommy, it's a girl!!*
When we were checking out, (I had to sign her out against medical advice,)
the billing department, questioned my husband as to why we were leaving so
early. He told them we were checking into the Waldorf Astoria (luxury hotel
in NYC) because it was cheaper!!!!

It was interesting to hear question why I wanted a VBAC. They thought it
would be so easy to just schedule an appointment for SURGERY!!! I thought
they were nuts, they thought I was nuts. I would do it again in a heartbeat!
