In working toward completing my LC program, I am doing
at least 2 days of clinical time a week, working with
the LC's in a hospital setting. I am amazed at the
number of nipples which, on examination, look
well-everted, but then retract toward the chest wall
with compression (the "pinch test"). I am beginning
to think this could be one of the major reasons for BF
failure in women who do not get help with BF and, for
whatever reason, give up after struggling along on
their own.
Two questions/issues: what are some most-favored
strategies for management of retracting nipples in the
postpartum period? Second question: if I ever work
with pregnant moms and discover these shy nipples on a
prenatal exam, what can be done during pregnancy to
help them evert? I am thinking breast shells, but I
know you Lactnetters will have a wealth of other ideas
to share!
Thanks for the help!

(who is hoping to have her LC course requirements done
by the end of this month)
