I have been assisting a colleague (midwife.) This is her third birth
and the baby is now 7 months old and fully breastfed. The mom has been
complaining that she is having a hard time keeping up her milk supply
for the past month. She says it started when she got her period around
5 1/2 months. Fenugreek helped a bit but not enough to boost the supply
enough to pump when she goes back to work.

Today she called me to say that there was a big improvement in her milk
supply.
She went to a Yemenite "granny herbalist" who told her to take 2T of
unprocessed sesame seeds and another 2T of "peshtan" which I think is
either flax or linseed in English. I was a bit surprised that she
recommended the above instead of fenugreek which the Yemenites use
generously in their diet. Her explanation was that the real stuff works
great but most mothers won't put up with the mess and odor. The
commercial fenugreek in capsules is so diluted, it doesn't do much.

I can't find anything about flax/linseed or sesame being a
galactagogue. Because this mother is both experienced and a midwife, I
believe her when she said she sees a big difference. Does anyone have
any experience with these substances?
