Susan,
In addition to the regular pathways of becoming an IBCLC, there is a
research project going on with BSC (Breastfeeding Support Consultants)
[log in to unmask]   I am one of their clinical instructors and am working
with my 3rd lactation consultant intern.  My first intern passed the IBCLC
exam after completing the course, using BSC's book, Blueprints.
Unfortunately, my second intern dropped out, but I am in progress with #3.
This can be done in the town the intern lives in if there is a clinical
instructor there, or long distance.  The research project will last for 30
intern/clinical instructor teams and then will be looked at by IBLCE.  Those
30 students who take the course must first have had at least a 40 hour
course in lactation.  After they finish the BSC course they are eligible to
sit for the exam.  Hope this info is helpful
