-More than 425 HIV-positive women in Nairobi had been randomly selected in the study to either nurse their child or use formula feed. All the women have been followed up monthly in the first year and quarterly in the second year after the birth.
Nduati and her team discovered that two years after giving birth, 18 of the breast-feeding mothers had died compared to three in the formula group.
Babies of the mothers who died were eight times more likely to die than the formula-fed babies.-
