I'm pretty sure we've discussed this on lactnet before, but my search of the
archives didn't turn up what I need.
This case is a mom I've dealt with on a number of issues the past 14 mos. I
*really* like her-- she's one of those "favorite client" types. We've dealt
with oversupply; she has had problems with her bladder and extreme
sensitivities in the past; we dealt with long term nipple soreness that
finally subsided after months of work; we've dealt with chronic
mastitis/breast pain, and now this.
Mom is telling me that she develops extreme nipple sensitivity/soreness
about 9 days before her period starts that is becoming very debilitating.
To quote her, "9 days out of a 32 day cycle is too many." She has a past
history of ovarian cysts, as well as a tumor on her thyroid which is being
watched closely. She has also had trouble with heavy bleeding since her
periods resumed a few months ago, and struggled with depression for the
first 6 mos postpartum. Interestingly, she says that the best time of her
life hormonally/emotionally was during pregnancy, when she felt very smooth
and stable. Could we be dealing with progesterone problems?
The mom and I have made a list of all of her suspect symptoms, and I have
referred her back to her endocrinologist for screening for PCOS and more. In
the meantime, I know that I've read of nutritional supplements that
sometimes help women with this type of cyclical nipple soreness. What have
other LCs/moms done to successfully combat this kind of soreness?
