Rachel, that Norwegian book could have been written in the US from the sound
of it. I hear this frequently from nurses, childbirth educators, and even
people who otherwise strongly support BF. The rationale seems to be that
babies need to learn to "self soothe" and get themselves down to sleep--that
this is an important developmental milestone. Sounds very "Ezzo-esk" to me.
I know my own experience isn't scientific research, but I always rocked &
nursed my babies/toddlers to sleep, and visitors could never get over how
quiet bedtime was at my house and how happily my 4 children went to bed and
how well they slept at night. Seems to me mothers have been rocking & nursing
their babies to sleep for a number of years now, and nobody has worried about
it until now. Sounds like just another way to get kids to shut up and take
responsibility for themselves without parental involvement from the day they
are born.
