It is, of course, best for infants to master breastfeeding first without
lots of bottles in the picture. However, Neifert, Lawrence, and Seacat
describe "Type B Nipple Confusion" (in their 1996 J Peds article on the
subject) as being an infant who cannot tolerate feeding from an artificial
nipple. In my personal experience, this is a much harder type of preference
to over-come, and constitutes a terrific prob. for working parents who may
or may not have day care providers willing to cup feed, etc.
For working parents, having Dad give occassional bottles after breastfeeding
has been established may well be appropriate. I often give this advice
myself.
