I flew home today after a lecture trip east that culminated in a weekend in
Philly visiting Kay Hoover. We anxiously got the NY Times to see if they
treated kindly our friend Kym Smythe, who is also pictured in our Atlas. Kay
and I really like the piece, and thought the tone positive and informative.
By the way, the whole issue is about health, alternative medicine, and the
like. In another of the articles in this issue (about the globalization of
contagious diseases -- rapid spread by travelers, etc) the author (Natalie
Angier) refs. the bfg piece saying: "...we're way behind most countries of
the world when it comes to the promotion and acceptance of the finest form
of disease prevention known to medicine -- breast-feeding. Sara Corbett
describes the outrage and disgust that a Delaware woman elicits because she
nurses her 4-yr old twins, though in many traditional societies
breast-feeding children of 4,5,6 years of age is considered a sign of
superlative mothering." (pg 69 col. 3). I think Angier mis-read the Corbett
article as I see no "disgust" attributed to Kym's behavior. She may have
been thinking of the Chicago case which Corbett also references.

Good job, Kym. And good job Kathy Dettwyler and Dia Michels.
