Here it is six years since you, Jan B., posted to the list about Valtrex
and breastfeeding. I didn't find and response to the posts on Valtrex. But
I am going to vent.
It is the usual "stuff". Mom called that she has shingles and her
family doctor physician put her on prednisone, valtrex, and Tylenol with codeine
and was told to stop breastfeeding.
I told the mother the information that Tom Hale's book says. I stated that
from the information I felt that she could continue breastfeeding without danger
to the infant.
I copied the pages from Medication and Mother's Milk and also faxed the
information on lactation risk factor on each med.
Today mom calls and tells me that her family doctor called someone; she
wasn't sure who at the closest hospital with a NICU. She couldn't remember
who he spoke to but he again stated that she should stop breastfeeding, so she
is going to pump and dump.
What added information is needed for the doctor to allow the mother to
breastfeed. The belief in this area is breastfeeding is okay, but so is
formula. I guess it just goes to show that the docs in this area feel that
we (breastfeeding advocates) are radicals and fanatics and do not have
sufficient information to be heard.
Sorry! As many of you state it is truly frustrating when you have the
best interest of the mother, the baby, the community, etc in mind.
