I can't believe there was no further follow-up. When parents choose our
"combination" plan (which includes 24 hour vag and 48 hour C/S) moms,
they automatically get a home visit 2 days later by the visiting
nurse-assuming baby goes home with mom. If mom goes home without baby,
she doesn't get the visit without a specific MD order for a problem, in
which case she probably wouldn't be going unless she insists on it due
to no insurance. The visit is part of the package price for a delivery
so there is the option of early d/c with visit or "standard" stay with
follow-up phone call from our "Nurse-on-Line".
In the situation you describe, most of our peds would NOT have
discharged the baby in 24 hours. Some actually leave it to the LC-we
call the ped after we have worked with the mom and they generally take
our recommendation about whether we feel the baby is "OK to go". In
addition, when a baby is going home feeding poorly, we work out a
feeding plan with the mom which includes an outpatient visit with the LC
in a couple days. There is one peds group that routinely sees
breastfeeding babes for at least a weight check before the "standard" 2
weeks.
It sounds like several places where someone "missed the boat" with this
baby. Does anyone else smell a lawsuit in the wings with this case?
