I was born on April 30 1975. I have told before of how my mom nursed me
successfully 7.5 months, but weaned me "cold turkey" because I nursed so
often at night, and without any support (she didn't know of LLL etc.)
she couldn't figure out what else to do, so followed the paediatrician's
orders.

I came across a sort of "diary" today, which is more detailed than my
"baby book" with regards to the feeding issues. I thought it was
interesting. My mom has told me she would have nursed me at least 18-24
months if she hadn't had such difficult nights (which, with hindsight,
we suspect was probably OSS/OALD like I have had with Sandrine). She
regrets that there were not the same resources then as I have nowadays.

I thought I'd quote a piece of this "ancient" history (only 26 years
old, really!).

What I eat:
"The hospital fed me Similac until mommy's milk came in--the nurses had
to fight to get it into me but I now take my mom's milk with no
problems. I hate my vitamins and gag and throw them up most of the time
if I can't spit them out first. At 15 weeks--still gags but is
proficient at spitting out. Tried rice cereal at 11 weeks--wouldn't
take it. Tried banana and took it until mother put rice cereal into
it--then took neither cereal nor banana alone! Oatmeal cereal started
at 14.5 weeks Aug. 10 (1975). Small amount quite thin, takes it fairly
well if in a good mood. Aug 20--Started 2 tsp peaches at lunch time.
Goes down well. Aug 27--Added barley cereal to oatmeal--Fiona ignores
mother and keeps mouth firmly closed. Sept. 3--Stopped spoonfeeding
again for a few days and then began with fruit only and only as much as
she shows interest in. Started handing her carrot, apple and biscuit
pieces to suck on, and banana. Mid-september--Shows preference for meat
and vegetables rather than fruits and begins to show interest in
eating.* Prefers lumps to smooth purées and will eat biscuit, bread,
etc. Nov.--eats pablum if it ias rice crispies in it!! Nov. 25 weaned
suddenly: Fiona had been crying frequently in her sleep and would only
settle with nursing. The habit got so bad she was crying every 1/2 hour
or less. We realized that nursing had become more of a comfort than
necessary for food and so, with the doctor's help and some medication
for a few nights she was cut off from mother's milk. Took readily to
eating from spoon and drinking from cup but was not too happy with going
to sleep without nursing."

*This is typical of me: I much prefer savory or spicy meals to sweet
desserts most of the time. In fact, more recently, I,ve noticed that if
I'm craving sweetness, it's likely thrush showing its ugly head! LOL...

I read this stuff, and I think it's a wonder I don't have many food
issues (I hate beetroots, but taht is about it!) and I don't have sleep
issues taht I can identify. I sleep well and soundly most of the time,
haven't been "scared" to sleep for ages, not since a small child.

I see a lot of my own daughter in this, as she too gagged on anything
and everything until she was 8 months old (and still does pretty
easily). If I'd have had to get some important medication into her, it
would likely have been necessary to do so IV or something like that,
because she would just gag or throw up. :-( I wonder what Sandrine
would have thought of artificial milk? Luckily she never even saw a
drop!

More comments:
"Everyone comments that I am a very alert baby. I followed objects from
about day 2."

I was born at 42 weeks (the day my mom was *supposed* to be induced:
luckily she went into labour anyhow!) and I was classed as IUGR, or
small-for-dates-baby, at 5 lbs 7.5 oz, but i seemed fine!

"Has long conversations with mommy after (and during) nursing. I find
that 10 minutes of concentrated play with Fiona usually leaves her happy
to play alone for a longer period rather than just putting her down to
play after nursing."

>From the notes here, it seems I pulled myself up to standing position
for the first time 2 days before I was weaned, which was about 7.5
months.

Fio.
