I feel, and this is simply my experience talking...no references to back me
up... that some children AT A VERY YOUNG AGE become accustomed to a "fight"
at feeding time. Feeding time is one spot where they have some control...you
can not make them suck/eat. If this child feeds well when sleepy/drowsy then
fine, feed him as much as possible during those hours. If he does not want
to eat while awake, or go 5-6 hours, fine let him. Stop the battle and
perhaps he will "relax" more during those wakeful feeds. If calories truly
are needed. There are recipes to mix EBM/formula up to 30 cal/oz, so less is
needed. If you need those recipes let me know, otherwise good luck. I think
the key is start with breaking the cycle of this battle at every feeding.
Remember, we dont continously FORCE a baby to go to breast in the early weeks
for this reason.
