One mother I've worked with had surgery in her teens
to remove a lump. Her 1st child showed strong
preference for the easy-flowing untouched side. The
mother followed baby's lead & simply nursed one-sided.
Born at 37 weeks & 5#, the baby weighed 25# at 6 mos.
This child continued to nurse exclusively for 2
years. After beginning table foods, the child
continued to nurse.
When the child was 7.5 years, the mother gave birth to
a second child. The two children tandem nursed on one
breast. The second child exclusively BF 3 mos before
"demanding table food." [According to mom, table food
reappeared in diaper...]
At 9.25 years child #1 may or may not be weaned (Mom's
not sure...) and child #2 continues to nurse at 1.75
years.
The mother has always had milk on the unused second
side. She has never used supplements. She continues
to nurse one-sided without problems.
