I work in the other "rest home" in Jerusalem, about 3 times the size as
where Chayn works. Some of you have already heard some of my wonderful
experiences. What Chayn is seeing is a wonderful phenomenon we have here
in my very specific limited cultural population of Orthodox "chareidi"
women. It is the "in order to suceed in BF I must spend as much money as
possible on breastshells, creams, vitamins, magic "strengtheners" of the
powder or vitamin type, teas, etc. because otherwise I will surely never
have enough milk because I am so busy because I am returning home to
another 9+ kids at home. " I am desperately trying to show them this is
not true, and to slowly educate about LAM so they will have some sort of
natural spacing and have more energy because of that. But, it is a very
hard and slow road.
Do any of you see this dependency of BF "things" to suceed? I say again
and again, in order to suceed, you need breasts, a baby, and desire to do
it.
Specifically about shells, I will not fall into their trap. I tell them
the shells are not for engorgement under any circumstances, they make the
situation worse. If they leak they should use pads, and I tell them the
best solution is to get up at night and nurse. I have slowly seen change
in this area, after 1 1/2 years of effort. If they are cracked or sore, I
will then allow them to only use Medela breastshells, as opposed to the
ones without
any air holes. Or I tell them their husband can feel free to drill 12
holes in the other kind. :)
I spend a lot of time trying to educate the nurses, and I will not allow
them to tell me what they think they know as better. After all, I am the
breastfeeding lady, not them.
