I'm writing because I can't believe what I just saw and heard...I just
returned from a three hour initial consult where a seven week old has been
given nothing but grape Pedialyte for ONE WEEK! It was pooping purple and
vomiting straight purple. This was a colassal case of mismanagement leading
starting with an induction, c/sect, possible birth trauma, separation at
birth, hypoglycemia immediately following birth (duh, I'd have hypoglycemia
if someone did all that to me), supplementing with glucose, leading to
nipple confusion; all resulting in agressive non-nursing, etc.
When the baby stopped nursing the doc on call said give Pedialyte and the
parents did just that and kept doing it. SIGH....I'm going to lose sleep
over this one. I actually resorted to the dreaded formula because I was
terrified that this hysterical, hypertonic baby was starving. I did get the
baby on the breast after the formula though. I'm off to toss and turn.
Thanks for listening.
Chris
