I have a client who is a former gymnast, has a 2 week old BF baby, and MD is concerned because baby is slightly under birth weight. The mom reports no increase in breast size during engorgement and that she knew milk was in because she started leaking. The baby has lots of wet and soiled diapers. I am wondering if a woman who is an athlete may have less developed breast glandular tissue, or whether hormones are affected, similarly to menstrual irregularities in women athletes. I will see her tomorrow to observe and assess, but she does report hearing swallowing, and all sounds normal. I am asking just as a "what do you all think?" or is there data on this topic that I should be familiar with? She is stepping up BF in the meantime.
Thanks,
Patricia Ellis, RN, MA, IBCLC
