Mark K. Ahlert:

>The CD I own is titled "Shakespeare in Covent Garden" and is performed by
>the Musicians of the Globe and led by Philip Pickett (Philips 456 506-2).

The Musicians of the Globe, who are, I believe, the Globe Theatre's house
musicians, brought out another CD in 1997 containing songs and dances
(Kemp's Jig...) directly part of Shakespeare's plays or always intended
to be woven into them. The music, when not anonymous, is by Shakespeare's
contemporaries: William Byrd, John Dowland, Giles Farnaby, Robert Jones,
Thomas Morley, and the younger John Wilson, aka Jack Wilson who acted and
sang in Shakeseare's company. It remains uncertain whether these settings
were those used for first or contemporary performances... but early music
coming practically to the aid of early drama is, state the liner-notes,
"an important part of the Globe experiment".

Some of the songs are very familiar: "O mistress mine", "Full fathom
five", "Where the bee sucks", Desdemona's "Willow" song, "It was a lover
and his lass"... but there are interesting discoveries to be made.

"Shakespeare's Musick" - Songs and dances from Shakespeare's plays -
performed by the Musicians of the Globe led by Philip Picket. Philips
446-687-2
