As I remember the original study on SIDS which came out of New Zealand a few
years ago showed that three things influenced SIDS: cigarette smoking, bf and
sleeping position. In the US only the sleeping position was picked up (Back
to Sleep campaign), but I believe the New Zealand study considered that to be
the least important of the three factors. When I read this new SIDS study I
felt it was just reconfirming what was originally found in the NZ research.
I don't think this new study has been published any where. The paper I have
said the research was presented at a CDC conference, and the lead researcher
was John Painter, a CDC epidemiologist.
