Lisa,
Do you think it is possible that synthetic oxytocin given 4 - 5 days
postpartum for excessive bleeding could adversely affect a Mom's milk
supply. I've been following this thread on oxytocin with interest as I
recently had a mom whose baby was 1 1/2 lbs below birth weight at 2 1/2
weeks. Mom had a natural birth at a local birth center and had been
breastfeeding since birth. She started bleeding heavy and passing large
clots around 4-5 days postpartum and told me she was given oxytocin pills
for two days to stop the bleeding. I suspect it was probably Methergin, but
mom wasn't sure - she kept callleing it oxytocin. Anyway, I suspected
retained placenta as her milk supply seemed low and baby wasn't gaining. Now
I'm wondering if the meds to control the bleeding may have effected the
development of the oxytocin receptore you wrote about.
