When a person suddenly stops eating (or severly cuts back) her body
tends to go into "starvation" mode-conserving wherever it can. I
wonder if the Leningrad moms had a more gradual onset of
"starvation". If they gradually had less and less to eat, perhaps
their bodies did not go into as much of a conservation mode. If
this is part of the explanation (in addition to the all-important
aspect of mom's mental attitude), perhaps if the moms switched more
gradually to the lo-carb diets their supply wouldn't be as affected.
Just speculating.
