Hi, to all, I just had baby #4 and saw a civilian physician after having my
other children at a military hospital. I had problems with this guy from
the beginning, but due to insurance hassles I stayed with him. On my first
visit, I received a "breastfeeding success" bag from one of the formula
companies. My physician never discussed breastfeeding with me during any of
my prenatal checks, period. When I delivered, he suggested the baby go to
the nursery so I could rest Vs breastfeeding within the first hour. Today
was the worst, though. I went back for my 6 week check and asked for a
prescription for Progestin only pills, and told him I would probably start
taking them after we begin solids between 4 and 6 months of age. He said he
did not recommend any medication while breastfeeding as "we don't know if
we'll find out later that the medication caused some kind of problem for the
baby." He asked me how long I intended to breastfeed and I told him as
long as my baby is interested, but at least one year. He said, "Wow! one
year, your baby will be huge and have teeth by then, you might want to
reconsider." I didn't get into it with him, and I'm wondering how would be
the best way to address my concerns. As an IBCLC I feel a responsibility to
do something, but I don't know what would be the best way to respond.
Should I write a letter to him with articles included? What are some of the
best sources to refer to? How does this happen that an obstetrician in good
standing is so out of touch? Any advice is appreciated. Feel free to email
me directly: [log in to unmask]
