Someone cited the following treatment for thrush/fungal breast infection,
sorry I cannot remember who:

"
The Breastfeeding Network in the UK suggests the following treatment
if this condition is confirmed:
Nystatin tablets 500,000 units every 6 hours for 14 days
or Fluconazole capsules, 150mg to start, then 50mg twice a day for 10 days.
Perhaps the mother or the baby has had antibiotics recently?"

I suggest that you visit www.breastfeedingonline.com, and the pages on
fungal infection by Jack Newman MD. In my experience, Nystatin used this
infrequently is not effective because Nystatin is fungistatic, and not
fungicidal. This dose of Fluconazole is the "bullet" dose for vaginal
infections, (`150 mg) and in some cases is ineffective. Doses are stated
in Tom Hale's book, as well as on www.breastfeedingonline.com. It is my
experience that mothers need to be treated with higher doses until they are
pain free for one week. And, in any case, they may wish to start with
Gentian Violet, as this may take care of it in the first place.
