<<Mothers seemed totally unconcerned about children chomping on the donkey
manure.
Kathy Dettwyler>>
A while back I helped a first time mom, a medical Doctor, who had inverted
nipples. After the initial concerns had been overcome (cracked and bleeding
nipples and attachment difficulties), she happily went on breastfeeding her
son.
I bumped into her in our local busy supermarket when her child was about a
year old and we were chatting in the aisle where the sugar was stored. Her
son discovered a pile of sugar on the floor, spilt from the racks above, and
proceeded to lie flat on his stomach and lick the sugar from the not exactly
pristinely clean floor. His mother did not bat an eyelid and even remarked
how cute he looked. Her home was immaculate without a speck of dust or a
cobweb in sight but she was breastfeeding and perhaps she was familiar with
G A Rooks hypothesis "Give Us This Day Our Daily Germs" as mentioned by
Cathy Fetherston.
This child is now a happy and extremely healthy 4 yo and is being tandem
nursed along with his baby sister.
Rose Gauld RN RM IBCLC in a dry Cape Town, anxiously awaiting the arrival of
her 1st grandson who is now 7 days overdue.
