Hi all,
I rhought I'd once seen a site for searching for drugs that were
compatible with nursing (perhaps a site based on Dr. Hale's book? I'm
not sure?). Does anyone know where I could find such a thing?
I've looked in the archives for "Hale" which came up with far too many
results, and most of them looked like personal queries about a specific
drug rather than mentioning a site that might give those answers.
I also searched for the specific medications I'm looking for
(Guaifenesin & Dextromethorphan hydrobromide) which are in a "chest
cough" medication as DM and expectorant, but neither of those was in the
archives.
As with most OTC medications, this box specifically says "do not
use...if you are pregnant or nursing unless directed by a physician."
but I know a lot of these are CYA scenarios, and the drugs are actually
not all *that* horrible (i.e. aren't passed that much in the milk, don't
have much effect on the child, etc.). This does specifically say "not
recommended for children under the age of 12 years" but although I take
that to mean that it could be a medication that would be dangerous to
children, that does not tell me whether it passes in the milk at all,
very little, or what! :-(
I know someone who is suffering nightly from a horrible cough that keeps
her awake, keeps her husband awake, and wakes the baby (who is over a
year, not a newborn). She would like to use something like this for the
duration of her illness (surely 7-10 days or so, if one relies on that
old quote! ;-)) but is hesitant to do so given the warnings on the side
of the box. This is one of those scenarios where she realizes that
likely a visit to the Dr. could be a catch-22 situation more than
anything else. She goes in for a "simple common cold" & he reams her
out for consulting for such an idiocy, but then she says "but I wanted
to know which medications I can take while nursing" and he says "you
should wean the child if he's over 12 months, then you can take
whichever medication you want" yada yada yada (etc.). That kind of
situation... She doesn't really expect much of the medical profession
where she lives (here in Québec) which doesn't surprise me, frankly,
having had similar reactions from doctors in the past. Hence my query
here...
If anyone could tell me if they do know of a site where one can search
for the drugs for their nursing compatibility, I'd be grateful, so as
not to have to post aditional requests like this too often! :-)
TIA!
Fio.
