Becky,
I have been where you are and my advice is "stand your ground." It is not
your job to sell people on epidurals and you may be the lone voice in the
wilderness that even questions medicated birth for your students.
I was once told by a superior that I should stop teaching about doulas as
an alternative to epidurals. I refused, saying that it would be unethical
and unprofessional to present only one side of the story and that it would
represent a conflict of interest for the hospital (which sells epidurals)
to limit education about alternatives. I showed her the "conflict of
interest clause" that she and I both signed when we were hired by the
hospital. I pointed out that if you advertise "education" you had better be
providing it. There is a big difference between marketing epidurals and
providing education. Boy did they ever back down after that.
I also keep Jan Riordan's most recent work (published by LLL) on the
subject at hand for those who spout of the "you have no proof" bologna.
When they start I politely ask them for their" proof" and I share Jan's
article with them.
