I think it is "contraindicated in pregnancy" by the manufacturer for the
very purpose it is used in pregnancy: to induce pregnancy loss (AKA
induction of labour in later gestation). I believe the earliest studies
with cytotec in the OB arena were in early gestations (beyond first
trimester but pre-viable) for termination of pregnancies. Then, apparently,
researchers or clinicians thought, "if it works at early gestational ages,
maybe it will work around term." At least, that's my take on it when I was
doing a lit search a couple of years ago when we first started using the
drug here.
