I want to introduce myself to the list and hope some of you can give me
some information on this case. I am a retired La Leche League Leader and
IBCLC. My daughter and I have a private practice and I also work in the
hospital as an LC.

Today I saw a patient with Transverse Myelitis. I have permission to ask
lactnetters about her. She is nursing a 3 week old baby but is pumping while
in the hospital.
She is on Prednisone, Tramadol HCL, Clonipine(?) and Amoxicillan. She is
thinking of quitting pumping as it is very painful both inside the breasts
and the outer skin as well.

Has anyone worked with someone with this illness? She wonders if the
pain would stop if she quit pumping and then relactates when she is better.
Her breasts hurt when she is not pumping but the pain is much increased
while pumping. So far she is pumping and dumping. She came in to the
hospital able to pump at least 7oz and now, 1 week later can only pump 1 oz,
she is pumping about 6 times a day with a hospital grade pump. She very much
wants to breastfeed her baby but is afraid, because it hurts so much, that
it might interfere with her healing quckly and getting home again. I will
see her again tomorrow, if anyone has insight to this please share! Thanks
so much!.
