I wanted to chime in on this discussion. With both of my boys I have
experienced a wave of extreme sadness about 30-40 seconds before letdown. I
have speculated because of this timing that it is related to prolactin, but
of course it's only speculation.
With my older son I found it overwhelming at the beginning. It diminished
with time, but I also found a couple of ways to deal with it. It was much
more pronounced when I was tired; good self-care made a difference. I also
tried, with some success, to redirect the feelings -- to view it as a
tranquilizing sensation instead of a paralyzing one. And it was a useful
phenomenon when it occurred outside of a nursing session: in those early
days with lots of leaking, it was a cue to me to apply gentle pressure to my
breasts before I sprayed milk everywhere!
I was given Valium once before minor surgery, and was horribly weepy
afterward. I wonder if there's a connection -- if one woman's "calm" is
another woman's "weepy."
