HEADLINE: Woman campaigning against baby formulas: Breast-feeding
advocate urges ban on company classes in public facilities
BYLINE: PETTI FONG; VANCOUVER SUN
BODY: A Vancouver woman campaigning against companies that produce and
distribute baby formulas took her message to Burnaby this week, asking
councillors there to ban nutrition classes sponsored by formula companies
from public facilities.
Marilyn Hogan, a lactation consultant, said breast-feeding should be the
first and second choice for new mothers.
" Breast-feeding is absolutely the best way to go. If that's not possible,
then donated breast milk should be considered."
Hogan said at least 97 per cent of women can breast-feed, but most stop
after a few weeks because they've been persuaded to use formulas.
By allowing nutrition classes sponsored by formula companies in community
centres, Hogan argues, the city is endorsing their use.
So far, she's approached several Lower Mainland municipalities and has had
responses from a few.
Hogan said Surrey expressed no interest in banning the companies, while
Port Coquitlam was receptive to the idea. Vancouver is waiting for a
position from its health department, she said.
Burnaby council did not make any decision on banning the companies.
Coun. Celest Redman of the city's community issues and social planning
committee, said the board has made clear its concerns over baby formula
promotions.
"We don't allow companies in there to sell things. But it's a little
inappropriate for us to recommend not to do this."
Richmond Health Unit nutritionist Kay Wong said formula company nutrition
courses are no longer allowed in community centres there.
"It's like saying the government is saying it's okay. It's really subtle,"
Wong said.
